Even after living in Japan for 8 months and trying calligraphy before, this still felt unique. The combination of traditional calligraphy with immersive digital art was lovely, and the projections of Japan’s seasons and scenery were super calming.

The walk to the studio was fun too, kind of like a little scavenger hunt with a reward at the end. Our host, Mitsuru was incredibly patient and kind, helping us choose a kanji and even making one based on our names. I also loved getting a piece he wrote to take home.

I’m 15 years in Japanese studies and teaching Japanese and I must admit — this calligraphy class is the most impressive in my life (though I got many).

Mitsuru sensei — the master of calligraphy will meet you at Oshiage station. Wearing Japanese style clothes haori and with a scooter in one hand he leads you through the streets and asks to find as many Japanese words as possible, you can pick up a word you are going to write later, or you can ask of any word that is in your mind.

After a little bit of walk a big surprise awaits you — his calligraphy studio is a smaller version of teamLab, having projectors installed and really deliberately decorated with students works and small decorative elements like the brush stand, the stand for aroma sticks.

The magic begins and first you see an impressive videography about Japanese culture and calligraphy. After you are being given a cup of tea and sipping the tea and feeling the aroma you learn about zen and concentrate on teachers practices — everyone can do — writing horizontal and vertical lines. Then you can ask whatever word or kanji characters you wish. Even you can write you name in Japanese!

After this masterclass one more impressive surprise awaits you, but I wouldn’t tell it’s a secret! And finally after the class you get the present — a carton tablet with your name in Japanese kanji written on it by the master himself. This present is so beautiful that you would wish to put it on your desk and display it!

I visited with two friends, and it turned out to be one of the most unique cultural experiences we had in Tokyo.

The experience actually started before we reached the studio. Our teacher met us at Oshiage Station and guided us through the quiet backstreets, sharing stories along the way. It felt like discovering a hidden side of the city.

At the studio, we were welcomed by beautiful projection mapping before the calligraphy lesson began. The instructor was patient and encouraging, making it easy to enjoy the experience even as beginners.

I chose to write “Odayaka” (穑やか), which means calmness and tranquility — a wish I wanted to express for everyone. Learning that calligraphy is about the movement and intention behind each brushstroke made the experience even more meaningful.

It’s a wonderful blend of traditional Japanese culture and modern technology, and it’s also a great indoor activity if you’re visiting Tokyo on a rainy day. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable and unique experience beyond the usual tourist attractions.

I like spending time in Taito ku and thanks to Kuro to Shiro art I discovered a new area. A real gemstone hidden near the Skytree. You look for hints in the street and then you go to the calligraphy workshop.

The place is amazing. Really Japanese like. I loved the atmosphere. It was not only calligraphy but also some projections. I learnt a lot and I’m satisfied with the kanji that I wrote. I could bring my favorite pieces and two presents.

It was my first time trying calligraphy, but I had so much fun!

I told the teacher which Kanji I wanted to write, and they created a sample with the stroke order so I could follow along step-by-step.

It wasn’t just traditional calligraphy either — there was also projection mapping, which made it such a fun and unique experience.

On top of that, the teacher came up with different Kanji characters for my name and wrote them on a special signature board to give me as a gift. I’ll treasure it forever!
